Lahr - Illkirch-Graffenstaden

Karte Illkirch

This page describes to route from Lahr to Illkirch-Graffenstaden. You can continue to Strasbourg.

Meissenheim
Inn in Meißenheim
First we leave Lahr by the bike route "Rhine-Schuttertal". It's also possible to ride next to the B415 and B36. We reach the Schutter relief canal 5 km later. The next section is on gravel. We move past the Autobahn (motorway), then leave the bike route and continue straight ahead. At the end of the forest we turn right and get back to the B36. We ride past Allmannsweier until the roundabout (4 km) and turn to Meißenheim. It's also possible to reach the "Rhine bike route" directly from Allmannsweier or via Ottenheim.

In Meißenheim we join the "Rhine bike route". We leave the village on small roads. Rhonekanal
Canal Rhine-Rhône
After 3 km we reach a crossroads and take the bike path to the Rhine (left). Here we take a gravel path on top of the dike.

By crossing the Pierre-Pflimlin bridge we enter France. The bike path is marked in the direction of Strasbourg (first as "Route des Forts"). The bike path first follows the multi-track N353, then we pass an alluvial forest before we reach the Rhine-Rhone canal. The bike path next to the canal goes into the centre of Strasbourg. We usually stop at Illkirch-Graffenstaden for food shopping.

On the way back we follow the Rhine-Rhone canal until Erstein. Rhein
Cargo ship on the Rhine
There we cross the canal and take the road to Krafft. A mix of roads and bikepaths takes us to the Gerstheim lock where we cross the Grand Canal d'Alsace. We ride 5 km of rough asphalt on the dike before crossing the Rhine and returning to Germany.

Now we can either turn left and ride an unpaved bike path next to the Schutter relief canal. Or we follow the road to Nonnenweier and join the canal later. This is a bit longer but easier. The bike path Rhine-Schutteral leads us back to Lahr.
